Remember last summer when Iceland shocked everyone and made a deep run in Euro 2016? This last weekend was 9 months after Iceland beat England 2-1 in the round of 16 to reach the quarter-finals. I’m sure everyone was celebrating in their own special way. Now we know for sure just how hard Iceland celebrated.
England celebrated by having Roy Hodgson throw in the towel as manager, while Iceland, with roughly 10% of their population in France, had some good ol’ bang bang intercourse time.
Iceland beat England on June 27, nine months ago yesterday. It was incredibly unexpected for them to reach that far. It was equally as unexpected for England to not lose on penalties in the semi-finals.
Yesterday, Ásgeir Pétur Þorvaldsson, a man working in the anesthesiology department in the largest hospital in Iceland, tweeted out about the sudden spike. The tweet translates to “set a record for the number of epidurals in the maternity ward this weekend – nine months after the 2-1 win over England.”
