Iceland Become the Smallest Country to Qualify for a World Cup

With the USA out of the World Cup, there is only one clear choice for us at HasBeenSports. All aboard the Iceland hype train. I was blown away by Iceland during Euro 2016, and I got hooked. I’m a sucker for an underdog.

Earlier this week, Iceland became the smallest country ever to qualify for a World Cup. Shortly after their 2-0 victory over Kosovo in Reykjavik, the Icelandic team were on stage with rapper Emmsjé Gauti celebrating with their fans. Iceland knows how to throw a party, that’s for sure. The community they have around this team is something to admire.

Sure, they don’t have the same underdog status that they had during Euro 2016, but you have to remember this is going to be their first World Cup. Only a few teams really know what threat they pose first-hand. They have no bar to set, and at this point I would love to see them go as far as possible.

Fyrir Ísland.
