Welcome to Patrick’s Picks

Hello my name is Patrick and I’m the newest and best contributor to HasBeen. Each Wednesday I’ll be predicting the following weeks USL Championship’s slate of games.

First my “credentials” I’m a season ticket holder of the greatest USL team that’s ever been Louisville City FC. My name can be found on the plaque outside the teams locker room of founding members. But my history with the team goes back even farther than that. I’ve been a member of the Louisville Coopers since the second meeting we had. I now sit on the board of the coopers as a member at large. But enough about me let’s get to the predictions.

The USL Championship season starts on Friday with Seattle Sounders 2 hosting Rio Grande Valley FC in full disclosure my knowledge of the Western Conference is lacking. But I’m predicting a victory for Rio Grande. I will be paying much more attention to the Western Conference this year.

The Saturday slate of games are:

  • New York Red Bulls 2 vs Swope Park Rangers
  • Saint Louis FC vs Indy Eleven
  • North Carolina FC vs Louisville City FC
  • Reno 1868 FC vs Orange County SC
  • Birmingham Legion vs Bethlehem Steel FC
  • Memphis 901 vs Tampa Bay Rowdies
  • Atlanta United 2 vs Hartford Athletic
  • Charleston Battery vs Ottawa Fury
  • Tulsa Roughnecks FC vs Portland Timbers 2
  • Nashville FC vs Loudoun United
  • San Antonio FC vs Phoenix Rising FC
  • El Paso Locomotive vs OKC Energy FC
  • New Mexico United vs Fresno FC
  • LA Galaxy 2 vs Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
  • Sacramento Republic FC vs Real Monarchs SLC
  • Las Vegas Lights FC vs Austin Bold

My picks are:

  • NYRB2
  • St. Louis and Indy draw
  • Louisville City
  • Orange County
  • Birmingham
  • Tampa Bay
  • Hartford
  • Charleston draws Ottawa
  • Tulsa
  • Loudoun
  • San Antonio
  • OKC
  • Fresno
  • Colorado Springs
  • Sacramento draws Real Monarchs
  • Austin Bold

Some explanation. Saint Louis and Indy have the potential to both win the Eastern Conference so it should be a really good first week matchup it’s the same situation out west with San Antonio and Real Monarchs. Louisville City has a tough opening week matchup at North Carolina but I think the defending champions prove that returning experience is invaluable in the early season. Nashville opens vs Loudoun who at the time of writing has officially announced 9 players including 2 goalies but Nashville has a whole new attack and will struggle to get going. Loudoun with an early season upset.

Season Award Prediction

Golden Boot: Stefano Bonomo Sacramento Republic FC

Golden Gloves: Matt Cardone San Antonio FC

Coach of the Year: Neill Collins Tampa Bay Rowdies

MVP: Devon “Speedy” Williams Louisville City FC

Eastern Conference Champions: Louisville City FC

Western Conference Champions: San Antonio FC

Winner of the Playoffs: Louisville City FC
